===some first questions===
Who?
developers, contributers, users, advocates are all welcome at mageia-discuss
Why?
we prefer to build a new structure where we (the community) have a better control on what happens on the distribution
where we don't depend on the strategic goals of the company
for example, if the company decides to focus on server only, who will manage the desktop releases?
in this case, Mandriva and Mageia will have to live together. I think that could be good to both distros
maybe, I believe the desktop part will mostly happen on Mageia though :)
What?
a new GNU/Linux distro
===other questions===
will the release structure change? you mean the release cycle?
yes 6 month or rolling ? rolling and a 2year LTS would be best! rolling is good I find rolling for bleading edge and 2 year LTS for stability
rolling is good, but requires a lot of dev efforts
well, by looking at the pclos forums, it seems that frequent updates also means software crashing from time to time, that's difficult to avoid in a rolling release if you don't put a lot of QA efforts, and strict deps between packages though, I can't really say about pclos, never really tried for a long time
sort of, but you can't consider cooker a rolling release, it's a bit too unstable :)
you can also do two branches cooker and rolling
I'd love this model as well, cooker + rolling + fixed snapshots every few months
a branch every 6 months is IMHO too much, yearly or a 2 year LTS would complement a rolling release better
if you have a rolling and release yearly only, you will be likely to have to download a huge lot of updates after the initial install :/
I always thought triagers should be packagers too, so that fixing easy stuff in packages takes less time ;)
also I’m in favor of dogfood, I mean, you work on packages you use every day
yeah :). and minor stuff getting fixed faster makes users happy, sometimes at least :)
http://www.myspace.com/mageia that would make a nice startup sound :)
sure, but if you want full-time employees working on the distribution, you also need a revenue flow for they work, and more or less directly related to their work, else it's not sustainable
in the beginning it will be love that starts this new adventure
I think if we copy the Mint donation system it will be as successful as for them http://www.linuxmint.com/donors.php
yes, but we're thinking about other revenue flows
but the donations page needs to have very soon, get the funds rolling in
they have to be related to the work on the distro, or you need a huge margin :)
http://www.linuxmint.com/sponsors.php for recurring donations
and have rss on cia-vc
maybe #mageia-commits and #mageia-bugs
Questions from #mageia-ru users. 1) does Mandriva SA own any software patents? Particularly, on drak* components? 2) what kind of policy do we expect concerning non-free and software patent covered software in Mageia? in other words, all the stuff that is hosted on PLF right now
1) no
2) excellent question
but they own trademarks
yes
on Mandriva
drak* are not registered
now that a company is no longer involved- we can consider patent encumbered stuff...maybe leave out the DCMA-style stuff like libdvdcss2?
I'm really not sure. I mean, I have no clear opinion about it. I guess it's good to think about it and discuss it.
not to be over-cautious, but to consider options.
I still think that a flame, heating a beaker, with boiling liquid in it, that emits a vapor that spells out Mageia would be appropriate. The 4 elements of alchemy in action.
Fire (flame), Earth (beaker), Water (boiling liquid), Air (vapor)
Done as a soft white (airbrush) on a matte black background.

===some first questions===
Who?
developers, contributers, users, advocates are all welcome at mageia-discuss
Why?
we prefer to build a new structure where we (the community) have a better control on what happens on the distribution
where we don't depend on the strategic goals of the company
for example, if the company decides to focus on server only, who will manage the desktop releases?
in this case, Mandriva and Mageia will have to live together. I think that could be good to both distros
maybe, I believe the desktop part will mostly happen on Mageia though :)
What?
a new GNU/Linux distro
===other questions===
will the release structure change? you mean the release cycle?
yes 6 month or rolling ? rolling and a 2year LTS would be best! rolling is good I find rolling for bleading edge and 2 year LTS for stability
rolling is good, but requires a lot of dev efforts
well, by looking at the pclos forums, it seems that frequent updates also means software crashing from time to time, that's difficult to avoid in a rolling release if you don't put a lot of QA efforts, and strict deps between packages though, I can't really say about pclos, never really tried for a long time
sort of, but you can't consider cooker a rolling release, it's a bit too unstable :)
you can also do two branches cooker and rolling
