The computer concerned is my professional laptop Dell E6400, with 1424 packages to be updated from 2010.0 to cooker 2010.1.
http://wiki.eagle-usb.org/wakka.php?wiki=InstallLaptopDevoDellLatitudeE6400
http://hardware4linux.info/system/4063/
I did it for my Eee PC 901 too (cookeeer) !
procedure to upgrade from 2010.0 to cooker 2010.1
urpmi.removemedia -a # delete all other mirrorsgo to http://easyurpmi.zarb.org and add only cooker mirror (there are no /updates/ : that's normal), I usually choose a rsync mirror as I've seen that there are less errors (ftp is used to time-out imho), this time I took ftp, just to check...
urpmi --auto-update # launch the upgrade : be ready for 4 hours at least, I have approximately a 650 kB/s download rate (using ftp server at my ISP, 700 kB/s at peak it seems)
My expectancies for upgrading
- first is to test cooker (I'm ready to have a development distro, with some glitches from time to time, that's the pleasure of debugging ;-) )
- I'm using a Dell E6400 laptop, with Gnome and no 3D effect, intel graphic card, 2 GB RAM, see below for other details
- currently 2010-03-31 bug with wifi see http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=233844 and Cooker2009bcm43xx (my chipset is not supported by b43 :/)
- second is to test OpenOffice.org 3.2 as it should be planned to be soon available (currently packaged in rc4, then rc5, now release 3.2 seems ok)
- tests done with Write and Impress : no specific glitch found with existing documents, modifications notes seem to work well in Write
- 3.2 is expected to boot faster, well maybe, perhaps it was suficient for me before :)
- submit enhancement to net_applet or drakconnect to take into account my smartphone correctly
- ttyACM0 or ttyACM1 should be automatically detected
- the "chat" script should be configurable (or editable), and saved for future use
- maybe have the smartphone appear in network connections ?
- well, does not work anymore o_O (works again with work-around)
- hard to diagnose at the moment as /var/log/messages remains empty (new behaviour ?)
- ttyACM appears instead of ttyACM0 (or ttyACM1) as in /usr/lib/libDrakX/network/connection/cellular_card the variable tty_interface seems empty (although initialized at 0 at the beginning) in function get_tty_device
- perhaps test Moblin or Sugar again (check if dependancies on network-manager are appropriately done)
- test inkscape (export from visio, modification in inkscape
- the bug with text-field remains (multiple lines are only on one in inkscape)
- the svgz export seems appropriately read, only one visio tab in each svgz, but that's suficient
Bugs encountered (and - hopefully - corrected)
Warning in file "/usr/share/applications/nautilus-folder-handler.desktop": usage of MIME type "x-directory/gnome-default-handler" is discouraged ("x-directory" is an old media type that should be replaced with a modern equivalent) Warning in file "/usr/share/applications/nautilus-folder-handler.desktop": usage of MIME type "x-directory/normal" is discouraged ("x-directory" is an old media type that should be replaced with a modern equivalent) Error in file "/usr/share/applications/writer.desktop": "zz-application/zz-winassoc-wps" is an invalid MIME type ("zz-application" is an unregistered media type)
- currently, 2010-03-28, Xorg taking up 100% of one CPU, seems to be bug 58447 FIXED
- suspend to ram not working either :/
- after closing the session, it automatically logs back directly to my user (side effect of gdm-2.29.92-3mdv that it does not show the greeting window to change user ?), but at least no more 100% CPU used by Xorg (service dm restart did not work for me), but suspend to ram does not work either :/
- problem with end-key (replaced by tilde ~ ?) see bug 58454 FIXED
- bootchart is the only package remaining ? where are bootchart-logger and bootchart-javadoc in cooker ? (should be in contrib ?) ok found, see Blog20100329BootChart2
Bugs to be checked
- does the wake up after suspend-to-ram still suspends once network is up ?
- nope, works ok now \o/ seems faster too
- does the "do not suspend" applet works again ? that is : click not to suspend, then suspend never happens (which is the expected behaviour, when watching a film for example or when closing the laptop which is playing music with rhythmbox and continue playing)
- works partially : ok as long as the laptop is not closed, when closed it goes to suspend :/
- seems to be only for automatic suspend, can be configured perhaps so that closing the lid avoids going to suspend ? (can be configured in gnome-power-management, could be in this applet though)
- do windows still launch behind the current one ? (a bit disorienting in OOo as I open many before realizing that they appear behind current one) still occurs
- to reproduce : launch firefox, Menu File / open new window : it appears behind the current firefox window (expected behaviour : appears before current window as it is a new one)
What I found new
- bickley : seems to check what's on my NTFS disk (yep I've kept a double-boot on this system) ; maybe for indexation usage ? (made mount.ntfs-3g takes a bit of resource)
- icons seems shinier, good impression, on me at least ;-)
- gnome-power-manager seems to come with new options
- I appreciate that the screen does not change luminosity after some time when plugged to sector (can be changed)
- epiphany has again "open in new tab" on right-click menu \\o \o/ \o_ _o_ _o/ \o/ o// (it had made me switch to firefox in the meantime, no I do not have a middle-button on my Eee Pc /o\)
- USB media seems inserted/ejected more rapidly, it appears reactive
Total timing to upgrade
beginning at 18h17, took 2h this time : far better than the usual 4 hours (it's the time of a rc thoughintermediate at 18h19
intermediate at 18h41 : 485/1424 wow 1/3 in 20 minutes o_O may only take 1h then this time ;-)
intermediate at 18h56 : 747/1424 wow 1/2 in less than 40 minutes
intermediate at 19h07 : seems stuck at 824/1424: sane-backends ctrl-c at 19h17 it immediately continued, kernel and dkms installations slowed down the process too...
intermediate at 20h11 : relaunch urpmi --auto-update, seem crond take 100 % cpu (red in gkrellm)
end at 20h13 : reboot, well it froze... first boot seems ok, I'm going to reboot to check how long it takes (now that dkms drivers have been recompiled at first boot, the boot time should be stable from now on).
un espace additionnel de 344Mo sera utilisé.
1.1Go de paquets seront récupérés.
Procéder à l'installation des 1424 paquetages ? (O/n)
proceeding 8 by 8 packages or so it seems ;-)
