Comment as tu pensé aux fonctions ?

English Translation

How did you know Mandriva (or Mandrake)?
At the end of 2002, I found myself unemployed, and to keep my standard I decided to continue my training with the tools I used to have. With just a few means of my own, I offered myself a basic license of Visual Basic.net, which didn't work properly on my Windows 2000 because of missing updates. With no ADSL and not means any more, I pirated a Windows XP which worked for a few weeks until I received a message saying that I could be sued for the use of illegal products. Exasperated, I decided to leave this world of profit that is Microsoft to try the adventure of the free sofware: Linux.

Why did you choose Mandriva and not Debian, Redhat, Ubuntu...
My choice immediately focused on Mandriva because of my nationalist nature. French products, only French products. In the same time, I even so, tried other distributions (Aurox, Suse, Debian, Fedora Core) to compare. But Mandriva (Mandrake in that time) only, seemed to me really mature from a user point of view. My last experience, indeed, was the fleet manager one , helpdesk specialized, and my mind at this time was more turned towards user friendliness than technical.

How long have you been using Mandriva? And before?
Since Mandrake 10.1.... Before it was 100% Windows
What have been your main difficulties at the beginning and how did you solve them?
My main difficulties were about the comprehension of the system working. How to configure some drivers, how to install (compile) an application from the sources. I could overcome theses difficulties by consulting different forums on the Internet and by reading many specialized papers.

What have been your main motivation(s)?
To keep my knowledge up to date to be competitive on the labour market and above all, that this unemployed time doesn't turn to waste time.

Why did you choose QT?
In fact, I know it will look like a troll, but I never liked Gnome and its development tools (Anjuta/Glade). On the contrary, QT had (for my liking) interesting application samples easy to take in hand.

How did you think to the functions?
All the basis functions were planned in my mind, but the feedbacks of the users, always give me news ideas always more interesting. I like to create...I often miss ideas but I always like to realize things we suggest to me. It's at each time a new challenge.

What do you like in/by Mandriva?
It's a whole ....

What do you dislike in/by Mandriva?
The lack of communication with the users. More light on the orientations and the future of the company. May be it will be the case, thanks to this magazine.

Why did you name this software ManDVD?
Man for Mandriva and DVD, well, like the medium

Which license did you choose and why?
The GPL license, because I have no choice. I can't afford a QT license, so I must publish under GPL license.

Do you have a tool to follow the success of this software (like the evolution of the downloading history or/and others)?
Nope, none. The daily e-mails are the best statistics.

Why don't you have a website really dedicated to this project?
For a lack of time reason. I spend a lot of time to enhance this software. I always tell myself that I will create a website later on, but I never find any time to do it.

Do you need help? If yes which one? Project hosting, website and forum hosting? Translators? Code writers? Documentation writers? Others?
Well, precisely, if anybody feels like making a website for ManDVD, I would be delighted.

At last, the title is, as you saw it “Interview and free speech”..then, free speech
I, myself, would like to cry out in pain. I am fed up by the attitude of certain persons who swear by only one technology and run down all the others. Windows supporters spoil Linux because they don't know it and in the community, the people surf currently on the fashionable Ubuntu, criticizing the others distributions. Being a developer for a long time, I know that not any program is perfect nor without any default. But everyone must have respect for the ones who contribute to speed up the “free software attitude”, mostly when they do it voluntarily. Then, most of all, community is a group of persons who share ideas and help each other. If not, that becomes a battle field.
End up by a positive note: Long life to Linux and to Mandriva of course. I would be delighted.
