1) Mandriva tricks
Do you know how to plant cabbages ..........which are encrypted ?Do you know that Mandriva suggests a graphic tool allowing to create very easily double an encrypted directory, a " vault "?
-> to be modified (for Drakdisk)
The magic command line for the multimedia

Search quickly in the Mandriva Club knowledge base
Do you know that you can use the Google search engine to make a search in the Club knowledge base?Launch your search in the French speaking pages of Google writing the word KB in your search
To search for example the page about URPM, hit in Google: KB URPM, the relevant page of the knowledge base will be the first one to be proposed by the search engine
Don't forget, on occasions, for a search about a complex expression, to use the quotation marks.
For example: KB "configuration files"
and naturally, if necessary, use several separated words, like here:
KB copy hidden
KB ""configuration files" date shell
Try for example:
KB firefox
KB openoffice.org
KB ls
NB : 'KB' stands for 'Knowledge Base'.
It's also possible to make Google displaying only knowledge base pages, by prefixing the searched word with:
site://club.mandriva.com
To add a menu " Edit as root" in Konqueror
Make improvements to your file manager.* Go on the site: kde look.
* Click on the menu Service Menus.
* Download the file "edit as SU.desktop" from the page Edit as Root.
Copy it in the file ~/.kde/share/apps/konqueror/servicemenus/ to have it into ONE user profile, or as a root in the file /user/share/apps/konqueror/servicemenus/ to make it available in the whole system.
* Start again Konqueror.
Henceforth, by right clicking on a date text type file, in the menu Actions you have the option ' Edit as Root'.
Run as Root is available on the same site.
But which packages are then installed on my system?
It can sometimes be interesting to know what packages are installed on the system, would be this only to know if the buddies double your date installed a package which could be useful for me!Several methods are possible:
In a console, type:
1) to have the simple list:
rpm - qa
2) to have the list of all the RPM installed, but by date:
rpm - qa -- last
3) and to have it directly in a file named "listrpm", it is necessary to be concerned about to know where the file in question will be created. To create it in the /home, it is necessary to write the path before the file with a ~ which is a short cut for ' your home'. Know that the command, simply used, without specification of directory, will create the file in the working directory.
rpm - qa>~/listrpm
or
rpm - qa>~/Documents/listrpm
Foot-note: the option "- q" (query) corresponds to the concept of request towards the data base rpm; it is coupled here with the option "- a" (all) allowing to obtain the complete list of the packages installed on the system. The option "- i" (information) send back informations on the package (version, *number of alternative (c'est quoi la variante?)*, date of creation, date of installation on the system...). There is many other options you will discover gradually.
Practical and effective!
To program the computer to carry out planned tasks: Cron Anacron and At
Cron : Cron is a tool making it possible to automate the execution of repetitive tasks. You must initially own the package "kdeadmin".
There is a graphic manager of the Cron tasks that you start in console with the order "kcron". Once you reach the graphic manager, you can automate the execution of tasks like for example the programming of the power on and the shutting down of your computer, the checking of the viruses on your Windows partitions with Klamav...
Anacron allows the periodic execution of tasks planned during the off-peak hours. You will use Anacron to update your antivirus or the cleaning of the file /tmp. The configuration file of Anacron is in /etc/anacrontab and there is no graphic tool.
At makes it possible to plan tasks, but contrary to the two other commands Cron and Anacron, At plans specific tasks which must be carried out only one time at a determined date. The deamon atd is launched at the system starting and it checks jobs to be launched from a script. There is no graphic tool.
Integrated documentation
Do you know that Mandriva includes its own documentation on many own commands? In a console, enter the command "man" and add then the service or the command on which you wish explanations. Example:man crontab
Which command is launched when you click on a menu of Star Menu?
If you are curious to know which command in fact is carried out when you click on a menu of Star Menu, click right on this menu and choose "Put in the execution window ".The window "Execute a command" is then opened with the selected command filling the Command field.

To empty the urpmi cache
(to be checked)
It may happen that during the installation of a package via urpmi, the console returns an error by saying to you that the installation is impossible. No use struggling unnecessarily, empty the cache of urpmi. That empties the contents of the cache directory of urpmi (/var/cache/urpmi/rpms). This operation can be only done with the root rights. Here is the command:
urpmi -- clean
Or use Konqueror, in graphic root, and manually delete the files in the rmps' directory.
Or else:
rm - vf /var/cache/urpmi/rpms/
2 - Windows users, did you know?
- That by using Mandriva, your music makes itself free? Windows restricts you and you don't know it. So, when you insert a CD of music with XP, you can only see your tracks as files with the .cda extension (audio CD). therefore, to be able to hear your songs with your walkman, you have to rip them (i. e. to transform them into a compressed digital audio file format: mp3, aac, …) with an external software. With the Mandriva's power, the same CD will contain all the pre-encoded tracks in a great number of formats: wav, mp3, ogg, flac, under the shape of track by track or whole CD. It will be enough to copy/paste your preferred passages in your walkman or in your hard disk to hear them with Amarok, without any other raison to tire oneself. Then, quickly go for Mandriva.
- That Mandriva includes, unlike Windows, a very powerful partition manager? by choosing Mandriva, no more Partition Magic, Volume Manager and others expensive and pirated pieces of software! you will be able in particular, to create, manage and modify your partitions on the fly. During the installation, the partition tool will take into account the automatically (or by hand) configuration of your partitions sizing, even with several hard disks. Then go fast for Mandriva.
- That Mandriva secures your personal data better than Windows? by default, Windows installs the system and your personal documents in the same partition. As a result, in case of crash of Windows, you lose at once your system and your documents as well… what a pity! The same, with Windows if you crash or reinstall your system without any prior well advised backup, you will lose unavoidably the profiles of your preferred software, for example your e-mails and your e-mails count connecting parameters. The backup is made anyway at the cost of a tedious search, reserved to the best informed. Nothing of that with Mandriva, which by default, install documents and your software profiles in different partitions of the system, in such a manner that if unfortunately you lose your system, or that you voluntarily re-install it, your documents and parameters remain intact: The e-mails are even automatically returned to the e-mail client and the connecting parameters are installed again as if nothing had happened. With Mandriva, it's so much easy.
- That Mandriva is a system that remains clean? With Windows, the defragmentation chore is familiar to you, and you must do it to keep your system fast. With Mandriva, nothing of that, the ext3fs files system, the Mandriva's default choice doesn't fragment. Avoid yourself a boring cleaning, go for Mandriva.
- That with Mandriva, instant messaging with your friends is really more simple that with Windows?. The instant messaging under Windows, means multiple chatting interfaces, all specific to their protocol (msn, yahoo, …). You get lost in too many useless windows which keep blinking. With Mandriva, the software "Kopete", a multiprotocol messenger takes all your protocols into account (AIM, Gaden-Gaden, Groupwise, ICQ, IRC, Jabber, MSN, SMS et Yahoo= in only one interface. Yes, one window for all the chats, at the same time! Then, what are you waiting to go for Mandriva.
- That unlike Windows, sold naked, Mandriva is distributed with a lot of included software?. With Mandriva, it's ended up to spend a fortune for expensive software, for rampant hacking and for constant downloading! By taking out a subscription to the Mandriva club (Silver level) for a sum similar to a Windows XP license, you can enjoy, as early as the end of the installation, the system and all the tools to work and to entertain: Two application suites, of which the very powerful desk suite OpenOffice.org, direct competitor to Microsoft Office, the touching up software The Gimp, the burning software K3b (of which the creator joins the Mandriva team) that has no reason to be envious of Nero Burning Rom, several personal organizers, the optical characters recognition, several audio and video players of which Amarok, as powerful as the players iTunes or Media Player, the music mixers like Rosegarden, games, a personal finance software and so many more. The club also allows you to download all the Mandriva versions in the form of CD or DVD for the 32 bits or 64 bits architecture, plus special club versions (specially updated), the "Live CD" (portable version of Mandriva on CD, able to run a PC without any installation on the hard disk) and the old versions. Each one includes, unlike the free versions (called Free) distributed by Mandriva on the Internet, all the pre-installed proprietary applications that you may need: Drivers for your video card, various applications like Adobe Acrobat, the plugins Flash, and so on…At last, the subscription to the club gives you access at near 50000 packages (all kind of pieces of software: applications, demonstrations, drivers ...) to improve your Mandriva's environment.
As early as the installation, we find our applications.
The organization makes it possible easily to retain its structure. Its stability is assured: each application lately installed respects this nomenclature and will find its place in its category. No more headaches generated by badly organized menus. Moreover, on the 2007, we will have -may be- the pleasure to see the arrival of a system making the installation still more ergonomic, while preserving a clear use.
There is only Mandriva to give you so many services, so don't hesitate!
- That Mandriva is an operating system much more safe than Windows? You are used to live hidden with your Windows, to install an antivirus (bought or hacked by the way), a firewall, an antispyware; and checking your computer safety is became your daily obsession. And in spite of all this, you still don't feel safe. You are right! On July 2006, Sophos company, an antiviral solving specialist, published its "Top ten": 3715 new treats in July, making the total number of malicious programs taken into account by Sophos to the astronomic value of 184007! With Mandriva Linux, no virus! Its Unix origin make it totally safe and impermeable . As a precaution, Mandriva owns an antivirus, Clamav, and an interactive firewall showing in real time the safety state and keeping your computer totally invisible from the Internet. Don't tremble any more, adopt Mandriva.
- That Mandriva recognize the Windows environment and easily interacts with it, whereas Windows only recognizes itself?. Windows doesn't recognize any other operating system, taking advantage of its dominating position on the PC market. No such proselytism by Mandriva! Yes indeed, you can easily install Mandriva on a hard disk already housing Windows. You will be able, then, to handle all your Windows documents, to manage your Windows partition if you want it, and even check if your giant of Richmond has not been devoured by a little virus more malicious than it… and all that from your Mandriva environment! Furthermore, and contrary to the commonplace, Mandriva can run your Windows applications with an adapted software called "emulators" (Wine, Cedega, Vmware or Cross Over Office), which takes in charge the Windows environment simulation under Mandriva. You will be able to use under Mandriva, all your best games and proprietary applications originally developed for Microsoft exclusively.
- That Mandriva owns a graphic interface much more evolved than the next Windows Vista from Microsoft? The Mandriva 2007 version incorporate many new graphic tools, including your three dimensions desk management. So, if your graphic card allows it (depending the available powerful or/and the card driver) Aiglx and Xgl are particularly well integrated. As a result the interface finds itself more ergonomic and nicer.
Nice also: for example the “tri-dimensional dice”
All the desks Unix and Linux have this nice function by default: it enlarges the work space by proposing a chosen number of virtual desks, allowing a better organisation between each working application. On 2007.0 with Aiglx or Xgl, theses desks are “pasted” on a three dimensions dice. To browse between them, it's enough to hit the keyboard short cut “Ctrl+Alt” and to drag the mouse in the right way! We can also simply click on a title, present on the task bar, of an opened application and you will be “took away” immediately on the right desk.
An other opened application quick selector is proposed: use the keyboad short cut “Alt+Tab” ....
Mandriva is also available with many different graphic environments, of which the most famous are KDE and GNOME. This possibility doesn't exist by Microsoft where you can only modify your icons and desk themes... (for the KDE environment, visit http://www.kde-look.org/ ) The configuration of theses environments are entirely modifiable by the adding of very powerful applications and functionalities. You are looking for the flexibility and the powerful? Mandriva is done for you!
